How much I.W. did you get this week? (My #1 secret solution to time poverty)
One of my mentors has a distinction that's been very helpful to me.
There are 3 kinds of work.
1. Standard Work (SW)
2. Improvement Work (IW)
3. Useless Work (UW)
Stephen R Covey talks about the urgent and important matrix, Peter Drucker has some similar ideas. Cal Newport speaks of "deep work" and how many hours per day or week you're engaging in it.
Time is the only resource we can't replace, and it is also the most wasted resource in the world. (Tragic, isn't it?).
Standard work must be done - it's what pays the bills, it's what you've promised people who've paid you, and it's what cannot be left undone.
Useless work is truly the tragedy - it's what could go undone forever with no real consequence, yet so many spend so much time doing.
Then there is Improvement Work - this is the work that typically does not come with an immediate reward, that is often difficult and creative, that in the long run improves your whole life, business, etc.
Most people understand this in business and work, and if you're on my list, chances are you're no stranger to improvement work in your business.
But what about in your life?
All investment activity represents improvement work. Investing by nature is an improvement work activity, because it does not come with a reward now, it is engaged in purely for the future, and it has dramatic and often exponential benefits.
If you are currently not on a path to achieve Lifestyle & Financial freedom in the next 3-8 years, it is 100% percent because you are not doing enough Improvement Work in your week/month.
If you want to look at vacation homes as a vehicle for your long-term financial future, then a fantastic use of your time would be spending about an hour evaluating the Vodyssey path and determining if you'd like to go in this direction or in another.
I never have an issue with someone deciding to go down another path, so long as they have a track that will take them where they want to go.
I do have a problem seeing people fail to choose a long-term path and execute, then criticize or bemoan those who do.
Whatever it looks like for you - ask yourself this week "what is the improvement work that will matter most in the next 1-5 years?", and do it. The useless work can fall by the wayside, and the standard work will get done because you're a doer. But never neglect the improvement work. It is your future.
